Universal Design in Education: Learner Variability

Myth of the Average Student

Today's college students are a diverse population, and this diversity is not just related to gender, race, and ethnic groups but extends to learning styles and motivation.  How, what, and why each learns is as unique as their fingerprints, and this variability suggests that instruction developed for the average student will leave most students' needs unaddressed and potential undiscovered.

Todd Rose, a Harvard professor and high-school drop-out discusses the "myth of the average learner" in his video presentation Variability Matters.

Founder of Project Variability, he is a prolific speaker on this topic and presents a longer but excellent talk in The Myth of Average: Todd Rose at TEDxSonomaCounty.
